I'd put off reading this book since it came out because I knew it would gut me in a similar way Christle's poetry does: sweetly, earnestly, brilliantly. And it did. This has been the most difficult month in my most difficult year. Both of my grandmas passed away within three weeks of each other and there is additional deep, ongoing family trauma. It is no exaggeration to say I am crying more often than not. This book has been a balm, a salve, a weighted blanket. I most likely won't stop crying anytime soon, but this book makes me feel seen, held. ( )

Het boek der tranen. Door Heather Christle.

Eerst en vooral wil ik even benadrukken hoe mooi de cover van dit boek is. Prachtig, geweldig aansluitend bij het boek en klaar om aan je muur te hangen; kunst.

Het boek doet qua vorm denken aan De Argonauten van Maggie Nelson en aan Dag Nacht Licht Toch, een lacharchief. Het is een bundeling van wetenschappelijke expertise (het wat, hoe en waarom), geschiedkundige analyse (bijvoorbeeld: het tranenkruikje), poëzie, overpeinzingen, vertwijfelingen, dagboekachtige aantekeningen en praktijk (lees: veel huilen).

Heather huilt om verschillende redenen: de zelfmoord van vriend Bill, kunst, haar depressie, de geboorte van haar dochter,… Op intieme wijze deelt zij haar praktijk (-ervaring) en theorie (-kennis) met ons. In korte of net iets langere, trefzekere, eerlijke, ontroerende stukjes beroert ze je hoofd, je hart, je tranen. Ik heb zo veel onderlijnd, herlezen, in mijn hart gesloten.

Het boek der tranen is haar eerste non-fictie boek, ik hoop dat er nog vele mogen volgen. Er verschenen al verschillende poëziebundels van haar, ik hoop dat Atlas Contact deze ook snel zal vertalen. Christle heeft er een fan bij! ( )

A long, complexly braided essay (but a short book) about tears, crying, grief, despair, depression. Which sounds grim but is actually really interesting—it's a subject much on my mind lately, anyway. It's strong on poetry with a little science and history, in good proportions, and the footnotes alone are worth the price of admission because they reference so much good material. A thoughtful book, and far less sad than it sounds. ( )
