Thank you NetGalley and Knopf for the chance to read and review this book! I think the blurb on Goodreads kinda says it all. That this is a take on being a young woman and all the different identities that come into play. Between the harmless fantasies 'Scabbing’ and ‘The Pussycat Dolls’ to the fetishization of ‘Starless Nights in Washington.’ You have childhood memories of mothers mortified and amused (The Burial.) and you can see the fate of those older than you (Assimilation). First, the obvious. THAT COVER. Which is related to one of my favorite lines in the collection, "In fact, it must be difficult not to sprout a head of snakes in a society that constantly hisses past you." As you can guess, this collection takes on mythology and indigenous representation (especially Maori & Native American) and feminism, but also mother/daughter relationships and pop culture.
I loved her unique voice. ( )
