Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This book of short stories by Dale Peck enticed me because of the O. Henry accolades bestowed upon the author (who was new to me), so I was delighted to receive an audiobook via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers scheme. But, alas, these stories are just not my style. The undertone is awkward, uncomfortable, uncouth. Maybe that's the point? I suppose the narrators do a good job, but my sense is that there's much more acting than necessary: in other words, were I to have seen the text, I might not have camped things up as much in my mind. (Actually, I'm sure I wouldn't have. So I guess I'm just not in the intended target audience.)If you're interested in the art form of the short story, this is a collection you'll want to read. These stories are beautifully crafted and entice the reader into a world where things are messy and challenging. There's a dark undertone to the stories, but it's realistic in the way that life isn't always flowers and sunshine. I loved this collection. Received this as an Early Reviewer and I cannot truly review since the narrator was so annoying I could not listen to it. What I did listen to I did not like. Would not recommend. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is a group of challenging stories. Uneasy with shock value at times, the stories were definitely original with questionable and uncomfortable takes on some random life situations. And purposely written to be in our face, take us out of our comfort zone. Dale Peck's writing is good, but the subject matter is difficult and probably not for everyone. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is the first time I have ever not finished a book I received through Early Reviewers. But I couldn't do it. I ragequit this book during the very first disc. The rampant and obvious misogyny in both the writing of these stories and the narration of the audiobook are appalling. Male audiobook narrators: please stop doing high, nasal voices for female characters. You don't sound female; you sound deranged and bigoted. Male literary authors: please stop exploiting female pain for the sake of your "art" - it's crass.Absolutely do not recommend. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
