Public flirtation is a crime in Iran, with predictable consequences. Jamileh Delkash has a teen crush, and she's only fifteen (almost fifteen). She can only dodge the Basij (Moral Police) for so long, and she's already floundering in Islamic propriety. Her budding independence stems from visits to the Monkey Bar, where local teens gamble on monkey bicycle races. Here, she attempts to fan the flames of love with Armand Ducasse, the son of Iran's Ambassador to France. Being good and being happy proves difficult to reconcile. The ever-watchful Basij and Armand's call to war, triggers their flight to Paris. But so-called friends, caprice, and Afghan slavers threatens their midnight escapade. PERSIANALITY was written to be a fun read, but given today's explosive political atmosphere, every father should buy this bildungsroman for his daughter.… (plus d'informations)

I thought this was a good book. It was funny and had all the angst of typical teenage life no matter what country you are from. It was also very insightful about life in Iran. It was an eye-opener for me. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. A great book about the life of a girl growing up in the difficult world. Complex and pulls you in, a fun read. ( )

Persianality takes you on a somewhat naive young womans journey to marry Armand and disappear to Paris and live happily ever after. If only things were that easy though. Jamileh is faced with challenges from the Iran secret police. She can't show public affection towards the man she loves. She ultimately figures out that sometimes the best things in life for you take patience.

I received this copy through a memeber giveaway and it has opened my eyes as to aome of the cultural differences that I was unaware of. I really enjoyed this book and will be purchasing Michael Benzehabe's other works. They are filled with quotable lines and felt like an easy read. ( )

Persianality gave me a glimpse into what felt like another world. Very different from my life, yet relatable. The main charachter is so full of contradictions from the start. She feels she knows everything already at 14 and is so willing to share her thoughts. She rebels against traditions while enforcing them. She has only one goal to make it to Paris with Armand. After many bad decisions she has many many more hard learned lessons and has to live with the probably unforgivable consequences. The additional story of Bosco and his family just broke my heart and lifted my spirits all at the same time. This is a really good read. Could be a really good movie. I read it start to finish without stopping in a day. It kept my attention easily. ( )

Top pick of the year. Jamileh (protagonist) will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions that you won't see coming. She is a cross between Scarlet O'Hara and Mother Theresa. I could see this becoming a Middle-Eastern version of Anne of Green Gables. Jamileh is quite a comical chatterbox. Excellent writing. ( )

READER VIEWS
Persianality, by Michael Benzehabe lives up to its description as a thrilling bildungsroman or coming-of-age novel through its truly unique main character: Jamileh. She’s young, bold, and naive with her head in the sky and her heart on her sleeve.
I like how Jamileh is not a perfect hero, but simply a young girl learning from her mistakes and misinterpretations in a radical environment. In addition, Benzehabe has created a very real and heartbreaking relationship between Jamileh and her father that captures the disconnect that often occurs between a daughter and father.
The writing style of the book is beautiful and there are many poetic quotes embedded in the book. One of the quotes that I liked was, “Blame love for your most beautiful dreams and your ugliest nightmares.” Persianality wonderfully captures the struggle to understand others and grow past a single viewpoint in an exciting way.

NANCY LaRONDA JOHNSON BLOG
Persianality by Michael Benzehabe takes the reader on a journey of an immature, young woman, desperately “in love,” and finds her way, learning what true love means. The author puts you smack in the mind of a most quintessential, unreliable, character. My favorite line (of which there are many): “Sometimes you have to travel back in time, skirting the worst parts, in order to love someone.”

DANI’S READING CLUB
Persianality by Michael Benzehabe. Best written YA novel of 2019. Love exists in Iran, but so does melancholy. Privileged daughters, like Jamileh Delkash, pine away behind twenty-foot walls. Jamileh has a teen crush, and she’s only fifteen (almost fifteen). She can only dodge the Basij (Moral Police) for so long, and she’s already floundering in Islamic propriety.
Her budding independence is fueled by visits to the infamous Monkey Bar, where local teens gamble on monkey bicycle races. Here, she attempts to fan the flames of love with Armand Ducasse, the son of Iran’s Ambassador to France.
Being good and being happy proves difficult to reconcile. The ever-watchful Basij and Armand’s call to war, triggers their flight to Paris. But so-called friends, caprice, and Afghan slavers threatens their midnight escapade.

I dread dinner with Father. I dread his suffocating shroud of silence. I dread his end-of-day rituals. Most of all, I detest what comes last: his lock-up-for-the-night clatter. These sounds rasp my already fragile nerves. Click, clang, grind, zing, clap, schlick: horrid sounds. When those sounds first fell upon my ears, my blood ran cold. And so, by degrees, very gradually, I set my heart against Father.

I sat on my knees and watched his face. Not so much as a smirk. What a refreshing surprise. I sat back against the passenger door, absorbing the new moniker. It was official, I was a woman with a capital W.
I thought I knew what a wall was. Now, when anyone asks, I explain that in my Jamilehverse, I once shackled others with such high expectations that I lived behind an inevitable wall of disappointment.
Somewhere along the way, I sensed I needed something from a fellow human, long before I had a word for it. Apparently, I was surrounded by angels who were with me the whole time. How unfortunate that I didn't recognize my special angel until he was gone.
If I had one iota of courage I would chase behind that man, running, crying like a fool the whole way. Certainly after five miles he would realize how serious I was. But Solomon was pedaling toward Israel, and I wasn't chasing him.
I suppose a daughter could know a thing to death, and still be completely ignorant of it. I had underestimated Father. A girl could know her father yet see nothing but genetics and authority. Yet, there was a time, when I faced darkness and knew his hand was not too far away. My fingers could see in the dark to find his.
