To him, our American songbook, in all its sprawling messiness, unites more than it divides. Neither the main text nor McGraw’s commentary goes particularly deep ... The authors are agreeably inclusive in their repertoire ... Not in the musicological class of Alan Lomax or at the historical heights of David Hackett Fischer’s Liberty and Freedom, but worthy reading for the anthemically minded. Music expresses the soul of a nation and illustrates its moods and contradictions from one era to another across time.
