The book provides materials and steps for how to make the volcano within the story and could be used to talk about scientific write-ups and how you want others to be able to do the same experiment by looking at the step-by-step directions you write. You could talk about how write-ups need to be very specific by asking kids to write directions for you to do a really simple task and mess it up over and over by taking everything too literally ex: making a PB & J. Then you could write out directions for how to do Pete's experiment as a class using the information in the book. You could use these as a non example and talk about how you would need more details. You could use an actual example to help compare the two as well.
