The Rise of Endymion ends the Hyperion Cantos which can be viewed as one of the major works in modern SF. Dan Simmons put so many things in Hyperion: the series deal with an infinity of typically SF themes while adding many historical and literary references which strengthen the novels. The Rise of Endymion catalyses all those themes while the author adds a more personal tone to the story which ultimately becomes a call to tolerance. The book tells the end of Aenea and Raoul's journey and their final fight against the Church and the Pax' obscurantism. Religious and theological questioning have become more present than in the previous novels. However Simmons shows religiosity in a very mannered and balanced way (the way it should be in any given book I suppose). There is much to tell about the quality and the complexity of the Hyperion story, fully mastered by the author. I can only recommend to read the epic fate of Aenea and this literary masterpiece. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

The time of reckoning has arrived. As a final genocidal Crusade threatens to enslave humanity forever, a new messiah has come of age. She is Aenea and she has undergone a strange apprenticeship to those known as the Others. Now her protector, Raul Endymion, onetime shepherd and convicted murderer, must help her deliver her startling message to her growing army of disciples. But first they must embark on a final spectacular mission to discover the underlying meaning of the universe itself. They have been followed on their journey by the mysterious Shrike--monster, angel, killing machine--who is about to reveal the long-held secret of its origin and purpose. And on the planet of Hyperion, where the story first began, the final revelation will be delivered--an apocalyptic message that unlocks the secrets of existence and the fate of humankind in the galaxy. ( )
