We live in a world full of shiny distractions, faced with an onslaught of viral media constantly competing for our attention and demanding our affections. These ever-present visual "spectacles" can quickly erode our hearts, making it more difficult than ever to walk through life actively treasuring that which is most important and yet invisible: Jesus Christ. In a journalistic style, Tony Reinke shows us just how distracting these spectacles in our lives have become and calls us to ask critical questions about what we're focusing on. The book offers us practical steps to redirect our gaze away from the addictive eye candy of the world and onto the Ultimate Spectacle-leading to the joy and rest our souls crave.… (plus d'informations)

Small but powerful read! ( )

What does culture value(spectacles) big scenes and how it effects our ministry to this generation. Christ is more than a spectacle!

I felt as though I've read this book before through many other books. There was nothing "new" and nothing seemed to jump off the pages. I read Reinke's "other" work on screens, "12 ways your phone is changing you," and found that book to be far more helpful and enjoyable.

The first half of the book is basically an exposition on various screens that grab and fight for our attention. But the overall message of this first half is the same as other Piper books that I've read in the past: see and savor Christ above all things and live for His glory above yours. Same message, different book. Don't get me wrong, it's great to hear this on a consistent basis, but I just didn't expect this book to go down that same route.

The second half of the book goes into detail about how humans make various "spectacles" and how those things fight and claw for our attention. But I was wondering as I read through this part - who doesn't know this? I don't know of anyone who isn't aware of the fact that screens, TV, gadgets, etc, are all things that are pulling Christ followers away from the Bible and from Christ.

I would have rather this book been a practical "how to" guide. Maybe that's just what I need? But I think more people would want that also.

Again, this wasn't a "bad" book. I just feel that I've read this before. And it provided nothing new that hasn't already been discussed in other works.
