As a forensic reconstructionist, Rory Moore sheds light on cold-case homicides by piecing together crime scene details others fail to see. In the summer of 1979, five Chicago women went missing. But before they could question her, Angela disappeared. Forty years later, The Thief is about to be paroled for Angela's murder - the only crime the DA could pin on him. But the cryptic file Rory finds in her father's law office suggests there is more to the case, and Angela Mitchell, than what was fed to the public, the details of which have been buried for four decades. Making one startling discovery after another, Rory becomes helplessly entangled in the enigma of Angela Mitchell and what happened to her. Drawing connections between the past and present, Rory uncovers dark truths about the reclusive victim, her father, and the man called The Thief that send her down a twisting trail where things may not be as they appear. Rory Moore is a forensic reconstructionist. She sheds light on cold-case homicides by piecing together details and clues others have failed to see. She receives a call while cleaning out her late father's law office that plunges her into a decades-old case. In Chicago, in the summer of 1979, five women went missing. The predator, nicknamed The Thief, left no bodies and no clues behind. The police did receive a package from a woman named Angela Mitchell, who knew The Thief's identity, but she disappeared before she could be questioned. It's been forty years, and The Thief is about to be paroled for Angela's murder, and as a former client of her father's Rory becomes involved with The Thief. He always said he didn't kill Angela and he wants Rory to do what her father promised - prove she is still alive.

This was a hard one for me to get into. For a year I'd pick it up every now and then and read a few pages. I got to about a quarter of the way through when things clicked into place for me. Overall this was a solid book. The characters are flawed but they're real. I liked the fact that Rory has social anxiety because that's something I struggle with. Rory is very competent at her job. I felt for Angela Mitchell. Both women are strong in their own way despite their idiosyncrasies. I'm glad I never gave up on this one! It's a great read and I'm already onto book number two!

Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for an ARC. ( )

New book, at least for me, and a new author. Rory is a character that I really liked. She is quirky and unusual, and extremely relatable. I hope that in the next book the character of Lane will be explored more as he seems to be a very interesting man, he's got to be if he is with Rory. That said...I really liked the way they worked together and that they respected one another's expertise. This isn't your "You won't believe it" type of book. The clues are revealed in a subtle way, and early on you will probably guess how it would turn out...but that's okay. The author has certainly prioritized logic and sense more than going for the shock value, while still keeping the story interesting. Overall...great writer. good mystery, excellent plot. I will read more by this author. ( )

The story alternates chapters from 1979 to 2019 in Chicago which focuses on a convicted serial killer known as The Thief. He had a particular manner in which he tortured and hung his victims to death. He had devised an M shaped pulley system which also allowed for him to receive satisfaction from nearly asphyxiating himself. The thrill from The Rush he received was intoxicating for him until he was finally arrested for the murder of his wife.

This is one wild story which you won’t want to put down. The main characters are Rory Moore, a forensic reconstructionist and her boyfriend/partner for over 10 years, Lane Phillips who is a renowned forensic psychologist and former FBI profiler. He wrote the book “Some Choose Darkness” which examined the case studies he conducted with serial killers over the years. Rory is a quirky woman who has struggled for years to use her uniqueness to her advantage professionally. Rory is actually an attorney who had practiced for a short time with her father for Moore Law Group. Her social anxiety and OCD were better managed dressed in her windbreaker zipped to the top, beanie pulled low on her head with non prescription eyeglasses and her beloved Maddie combat boots.

She prefers to work behind the scenes that is until her father suffers a fatal heart attack. Rory has to step in to handle her father’s open cases and clear out his office. Meanwhile, she meets with Walter Byrd as a favor to her boss and trusted friend, Detective Ron Davidson. She initially believes she is consulted for her expertise in porcelain doll restoration which she learned from her great aunt now in a nursing home. Once she agrees she realizes that the doll belonged to his daughter, Camille Byrd who was strangled a year ago.

Rory knows that Ron set her up to help solve the cold case of this man’s daughter. She is reluctant to agree given the additional legal work she has closing her fathers law office. Coincidentally, she comes across a case that is scheduled before the parole board of The Thief who her father has been representing for years since his incarceration 40 years ago. Rory becomes eager to discover the nature of her father’s relationship with the convicted murderer.

The past and present collide as Rory learns more about the events leading to the capture and conviction of “Forsicks” as he was referred to in prison. He ran the prison library for 30 years and was the model of a reformed convict. He relied on Rory’s father to get him released from Stateville Correctional. Although it could never be proven as no bodies or evidence was discovered, they believed he was responsible for the five deaths back in 1979. He was arrested when his wife went missing and presumed dead.

New evidence is mysteriously delivered to the police station which could alter the fate of many people. This is a creepy tale which shows the lengths people with go to protect their family and loved ones.

Book 1 of a new series. Rory is a genius in forensic reconstruction, and her lover, Lane, is an expert in psychology. Together, they work on the Murder Accountability Project. When Rory's father dies suddenly, she is pulled into a case of a man eligible for parole. He is called The Thief, because the police believe he captured and killed several women during the 1970s, although no bodies have been found. Now, Rory feels a strange connection to Angela Mitchell, who was believed to be one of the victims, and went missing after she identified the killer to authorities.
This is a quick read, and although I figured out the connection early on, I still enjoyed the book, and look forward to reading more of this series.
