Whew, this is more on the porny end of the spectrum than I was expecting. Not really my jam but well written and very readable. A few nice twists. Not that into the main characters, but will definitely seek out Charles' other book(s?) about the detective. ( )

Entirely wonderful. I may have squeaked at that last revelation, so neatly did it upend my assumptions. I have a hard time even reading about humiliation, but everything Alec endures is worth the climactic scenes, and that finale... I've been a fan of the author's work for awhile now, but this one redoubles that devotion. ( )

Perhaps a little bit rounded up, the relationship was interesting from the beginning, but the emotional aspect took a little while to get going. It had a pretty strong finish though, and brought me joy, and I like them together. ( )

4.5 stars
As with every K.J. Charles book I've read so far - once I started it, I couldn't stop until I was done.
I love how every character in her books is unique to any other she's written. Both Alec and Jerry are in no way typical and managed to surprise me - Alec turned out unexpectedly sly and Jerry unexpectedly sweet. I loved them both.
The setting seemed a touch over the top - I was a bit incredulous when it came to Alec's parents, but turns out they were based on a real couple. ( )

Audio Reread: 7/11/21 I'd give it 4.5 now without a doubt. I round up for Susan.
Instead of offering a coherent review of any kind, QUOTES. None should be spoilers.
Alec took a seat opposite Susan with his back to the door, and helped himself to a boiled egg, but couldn't stomach the wobbling whiteness, the too-vivid viscous yolk.
---
"Right." Lane was going a little red. "Right. One more question: do I look like your fucking lackey?"
--
Jerry looked at that picture for what seemed hours, face unreadable. He didn't speak, he didn't move, and Alec watched him, throat as constricted as though Jerry's hand was gripping it tight.
---
"If you could work out a way to remove half your heart and soul and lend them to me, we might both be normal people."

I'm very relieved I decided to reread this, it's been 1.5 years, and I didn't realize just how much set up there is for Susan's book here.

Original Review
Well that was quick.

Lovely. Sorry to say my reviews are suffering a bit, but I might have to come back to fill in some here. Might not. ( )
