A book of rich descriptions of the west and its natural phenomena during the Indian Wars. Written from the point of view of an American Cavalry unit scout, the narrative weighs the complex relations of the US government's desire to place the Native Americans on reservations while the tribes themselves often preferred to wage a violent defense to foreign land claims c. 1860–1880. The main characters are overly numerous for such short novel but fairly well drawn out. There is an overriding sadness which pervades the entire tale: career disappointments, physical hardships, primitive living conditions, and the lack of real civilization outside of military garrison life. I am not a great fan of westerns, and this felt a little like a screenplay, but I enjoyed this story about Arizona and fort life among the dying Indian nations.
