If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again![return][return]Eric Carle's beautiful drawings, a nice biology lesson, and a helpful reminder that it can take a lot of practice to learn to do something. ( )

Genre: modern fantasy
This is a great book because it is about how a wise click beetle teaches a young click beetle to flip over. These impossible interactions between these two insects and others are what make it a wonderful fantasy story for elementary school students. Throughout this story, the young beetle has to learn that it is important to have perseverance in order to accomplish great tasks. He tries several times to flip over but always lands on his back. Finally, though, with the help of the wise old click beetle, the young click beetle learns to flip over and land on his stomach. This picture book can be used for lower grade students and I will use it in classroom library to encourage my students to be inspired all the time. ( )

Another of Eric Carle's books where the characters are all animals. This story is about a click beetle who has to learn how to flip over from his back onto his feet. He keeps trying, but does not succeed. He meets many animals along the way to watch him, cheer him on, and encourage him to keep trying. Eventually the click beetle does flip over. He was able to learn how to do it himself through practicing and never giving up. Similar to Eric Carle's book, The Very Quiet Cricket, this clumsy beetle was trying to obtain a goal that needed to practice to succeed. Also like many of Carle's other books, his illustrations are in the form of collages of very bright colors. ( )

The Very Clumsy Click Beetle is a story about a beetle who cannot flip over on his own. At the beginning of the book, the beetle ended up on his back and yelled out for help. He received help from an older click beetle who showed him how to flip back over. The beetle tried and tried again to show the flip to his friends but failed every time, making him look clumsy. Through his constant dedication, the beetle is able to flip with a "click" in the end. This book is modern fantasy.
