Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. HTML:From #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward comes an unforgettable story of passion and vengeance in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.
When Ahmare's brother is abducted, there is nothing she won't do to get him back safely. She is unprepared, however, for the lengths she will have to go to save his life. Paired with a dangerous but enticing prisoner, she embarks on an odyssey into another world.

Duran, betrayed by his father, imprisoned in a dungeon for decades, has survived only because of his thirst for vengeance. He has been biding his time to escape and is shocked to find an unlikely and temporary freedom in the form of a determined young female.

Battling against deadly forces and facing unforeseen peril, the pair are in a race to save Ahmare's brother. As time runs out, and the unthinkable looms, even true love may not be enough to carry them through.

People should be affected by death, especially if they’re responsible, no matter the reasons, no matter the justifications. ( )

I enjoyed their story, however certain parts of it didn't connect like the relationship with the shadow. It was confusing. It was kind of did they or didn't they? And the relationship with the conqueror, seemed strange. it was a good story as a side piece, but I don't see how it ties in to the current series. Does that make sense? Anyway it was a cute story. it would have been cooler if there was a direct high-end. Like maybe the grandfather may have been a brother, but I don't know? Just something to tie it all together. Like a cute little bow lol. ( )

While this was a good story I didn't feel it was up to J.R. Ward's standards.

The first half of the book is vague on character build. You don't really know much about either of the MC's to feel connected to them.
You learn more about Ahmare first, but details on Duran don't really come to play until about half way through. Once you get to this point the story starts to flow better and you start to connect more.

The action and suspense is high octane. Those parts I loved.
There is a lot of intrigue and mystery surrounding both 'Bad' guys. One of which is Duran's father.

The adult romance is a slow burn and when it finally ignites it is beyond hot & steamy.

I'm not sure where Ms. Ward is going with this novella. The BDB is barely mentioned throughout. There is a very small part about them at the end.

All things considered, I have a feeling there is more to this. It felt like a foundation for spin-off and I am curious to see where it will lead in the future. ( )

Another novella set in the BDB world! I really like that JR Ward is writing these and giving us a glimpse into the lives of “ordinary” vamps who aren’t Brothers. As a warning, parts of this one get pretty intense. Duran has been held captive and tortured for two decades, and there are some pretty graphic descriptions. Our heroine, Ahmere, is AWESOME. She’s on a mission to save someone important to her, and is a baddass in her own right. Plus we meet a collection of side characters in this one who are equally intriguing and have me excited about future novellas like a female Shadow with some pretty amazing powers—seriously, the women were spot on in this one.

Both Duran and Ahmere have their own missions and various dangers present themselves alng the way. Seeing some of Duran’s psychological wounds and the after-effects was especially interesting. This was one novella where I almost wished it could have been a full-length book, just because then there would have been more time within the book to show Duran’s journey, which after everything he went through, had to be a long progress. And now we wait for “The Savior”!

Trigger Warnings: torture, mentions of rape
