So often I find that conflicts between family members are meaningless and kind of stupid in novels (and generally in real life too, but that's a different conversation) but, while I still think this one was a bit stupid Honest to goodness, this was not the story I thought I was walking into when I first started reading....and I think that's why it was bothering me for a while as I read. There were all these secrets being alluded to, but unrevealed, one in particular that seemed to start them all, and if it didn't come out sooner rather than later, I thought I might throw my first book. Hey, I'm being honest! It kept circling round and round the hidden truth without lifting the curtain it was behind. Eventually about two thirds in, it happened...and from there my outlook on everything changed. The losses felt so deeply among this family, the divisions that were the fallout of misunderstandings and assumptions...they all changed their lives so drastically, and filled them with so much hurt and resentment. It certainly speaks to clearing to the air and speaking your heart in lieu of getting lost between the what ifs and might have beens. **copy received for review; opinions are my own I had such a hard time getting through this book which is very rare for me. It is such a tragic and heart breaking storyline that describes miscarriages, illness, and suicide in such horrifyingly vivid details. Picking up this book felt almost like a chore and left me feeling depressed when I put it down. I felt like the book was entirely redundant and boring until they finally revealed the “big” secret that Jess had been holding onto for 30 years. They built up this secret so much throughout that entire book that by the time they revealed what it was, it was very anticlimactic and ended up being a huge misunderstanding. Overall, just disappointed I wasted my time reading this. If Only I Could Tell You was one of my highly anticipated fall reading picks. I love books that weave family history into present-day issues and this book kept me guessing while also having a relatable storyline. This was definitely heartbreaking at many moments but also had elements of hope. Sorrow and loss and the choices we make can have life long ramifications that many readers will be able to relate. This book consists of big tragedies and smaller everyday ones and while I think this will affect readers differently, I connected a lot with this. I enjoyed how the story slowly evolved and I felt like it had a satisfying ending. I love books that suck me in while also having me think about things that have happened in my own life and this was a great balance. Thank you to Harper Collins & NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
