Ended up skimming to the end. ( )

Josie Taylor is 4 years old. Actually she's 16; today is her Leap Year birthday. The novel follows Josie's day as she takes the test for her driver's license, tries out for "Romeo and Juliet," plays the school's annual scavenger hunt with her friends, celebrates with her family, celebrates with her friends and finds out one of her best friends Katy has a crush on a female teacher. In alternating chapters, we read the thoughts, reactions, and backgrounds of the people Josie interacts with during her day.

For this book, I rated it a 3.5. I did enjoy the adventurous things that were going on through the book, but i felt like it needed to be a bit longer, the other thing is, the chapters were arranged in a certain order. For instance, one chapter would be the main character's perspective and then the next, it would be everyone else's perspective which was, I thought, unique.

Basically, this whole story was about a character named Josie Taylor who was born on Leap day (which happens every 4 years) and mentions all the adventures she has throughout the day like going on a scaventure hunt, drivers test, going to the lake and lots more. ( )

Cute little story about the day you turn 16 and getting drivers license and scavenger hunts and dart wars and brothers who end up defending you and relationships....Some stuff I would just as soon they left out but that's the way of the world. ( )

Josie is a teenage, melodramatic girl experiencing her leap day birthday adventures throughout a single day as told by Wendy Mass in Leap Day. Nothing about Josie stands out during her mundane life quite like her birthday. This event is so special because Josie is one of few people born on leap day in the world, and her fourth (16th) birthday is approaching fast in this surprisingly quick paced book. Each event, from a surprise birthday celebration to a long kept secret itching to be told, is an important factor in the initiation of turning sixteen.

I have to give Mass credit. Her writing may not have been very deep or meaningful, but she took a chance and used a creative approach. She started off from the perspective of the main character Josie and then stepped into the minds of the people surrounding Josie, relating how they handled and influenced each situation. Every character has different opinions about the events of life and surprises that pop up at random times. I understand it might have been hard to peek into many people’s thoughts and write in many different styles to fit each person’s personality. However, it seemed like she just jotted down a couple of notes without revision. Mass didn’t express the feeling of a hopeful young and carefree 16 year old. It seemed to me that Mass did the minimum, showing little creativity and limited description of the characters. She also disappointed me in this book because when she jumped abruptly to different characters, she didn’t thoroughly grasp each person’s extraordinary uniqueness. Although the book had moments of success and fascination, I feel that the weak foundation of an uninteresting beginning, without a hook, gave no support to the book. The reasonable parts of the book were overpowered with poor writing. With each click of a switch I found myself more uncomfortable with the book’s lack of effort and purpose. Wendy Mass certainly leaped her way through the day in her book Leap Day as well as out of my liking.

Right now it's seven o'clock on a Monday morning, and I'm lying on the floor of my bedroom watching the white plastic ceiling fan spin around and around and around. I don't actually choose to sleep on the floor; some morning I just wind up here.
