A New York Times bestseller! USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller! When a tragic accident takes the life of 17-year-old Raven Roth's foster mom--and Raven's memory--she moves to New Orleans to recover and finish her senior year of high school. Starting over isn't easy. Raven remembers everyday stuff like how to solve math equations and make pasta, but she can't remember her favorite song or who she was before the accident. And when impossible things start happening, Raven begins to think it might even be better not to know who she was before. But as she grows closer to her new friends, her foster sister, Max, and Tommy Torres, a guy who accepts her for who she is now, Raven has to decide if she's ready to face what's buried in the past...and the darkness building inside her. From #1 New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia and first-time graphic novel artist Gabriel Picolo comes this riveting tale of finding the strength to face who you are and learning to trust others--and yourself.… (plus d'informations)

Interesting origin story but not my favorite Raven story. ( )

What is it?
This is a graphic novel representing one interpretation of the back story for the character Raven, from Teen Titans.

Should you read it?
Maybe? If you aren't familiar with the character of Raven, or the Teen Titans, this book might not be of any interest to you. The graphic novel explores Raven’s struggles with identity after she loses her memory. Her memory was lost after she was in a fatal car accident with her mother. She is then taken in by her aunt and reintroduced to teen life through her cousin, Max. The story takes place in New Orleans, so there are many references to the cuisine, well-known cemeteries (like Lafayette), and even voodoo, tarot cards, and paranormal influences on the characters. Raven, who is the half-daughter of the devil himself, slowly regains her memory as well as connects with her powers and uses them for good. Oh, and she falls in love with a boy in her high school. The plot itself wasn’t the most moving, but the artwork found in the graphic novel was breathtaking.

The cover to the edition I read can be found above. ( )

Raven is in a car accident which steals her memory and kills her mother, so she goes to live with her aunt and her cousin, Max. Raven doesn't understand why she can read the thoughts of other people and why she can make things happen just by thinking about them, but Max seems to be able to help her control her thoughts. When she becomes interested in a boy in her school, she questions his feelings as well as her own. Raven struggles with nightmares and some of them involve her aunt and a demon, confusing her already sketchy memory.
I had no previous knowledge of the character of Raven or the Teen Titans, but I've enjoyed the work of Kami Garcia so I gave this book a chance. The dialog is very believable and the story is captivating. There are twists at the end of the book that make the next book in the series something to look forward to. The illustrations are well-done, especially the coloring which highlights the emotions that Raven is feeling. Overall, a very good beginning to what promises to be a good series. My only complaint is that the next volume doesn't come out until the summer of 2020. ( )

DC Comics graphic novel focusing on Raven. After her foster Mum is killed in a car crash, Raven goes to live with her aunt and cousin Max in New Orleans. Raven has not only lost her memory from the car crash, she also starts hearing other people's thoughts, making things happen when she wishes for it and seeing strange visions. What is going on? Max and her aunt may know and are keeping it secret from Raven. Also Raven has to contend with the usual high school problems of bullying and dating as well as working out what's happening. Great graphics - very easy to read and fast paced novel that I consumed in about 20 minutes. Good for lovers of superheroes and also teenage angst novels. ( )

It was pretty good. I'm not an expert at Teen Titans or anything. Saw a few cartoons, that's it really. But the story here wasn't bad. The art though, love it. It's beautiful. I'm always so impressed with artists like that. There was a lot of detail in a good portion of the frames. If I could rate just the art it would be a 5. I already have a copy of the next one and will be reading that one soon. ( )
