Wanted to say a few things about Karin Slaughter, as she is awesome. Even if she didn't win Holy Moley...

In my ever-lengthening TBR, I have a collaboration between Karin Slaughter and another favorite for-fun-reading author, the retiring Lee Child. It brings Will Trent and Jack Reacher [b:Cleaning the Gold|45302351|Cleaning the Gold (Jack Reacher, #23.6; Will Trent, #8.5)|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1556208611l/45302351._SY75_.jpg|69820960].

Anyway, you'll never convince me that [b:The Last Widow|42599605|The Last Widow (Will Trent, #9)|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1555116218l/42599605._SY75_.jpg|63065649] wasn't either the impetus, or the audition for, or just an "I'm too excited to wait" novel for that collaboration, because this is essentially a Jack Reacher story, with Trent as Reacher. Thinking back, I can kind of see how the comparison existed before, but this novel is straight-up Reacher and in the best way.

Slaughter's Will Trent series, generally, is one of the more innovative series I've read, and I read a lot of them. Maybe too much. But as an adult (and fully out of college), I read for myself now and I can have all the candy I want. Karin Slaughter is one of those writers, though, that I look forward to her stand-alone novels as much as her series installments. I have more to say about that, but I'll save it for another time. For now, I will say this book is enhanced by its comparable-to-Reacher elements (not an homage, really, 'cause it completely fits within the created universe; I mean, it doesn't jump the shark, like [b:The Green Ripper|527870|The Green Ripper (Travis McGee #18)|John D. MacDonald|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1324202199l/527870._SY75_.jpg|1924506]) as well as Slaughter's continued efforts to problematize the format of the crime novel. Very much appreciated. Highly recommend. ( )

Dr. Sara Linton and GBI Agent Will Trent are relaxing at Sara's aunt's home when emergency sirens blare at nearby Emory College: they jump into her BMW X5 to help when they come across a strange auto accident, where a driver has an unexplained broken neck. Sara senses something is wrong and asks Will to fetch her bag from the glove compartment when all hell breaks loose. Will manages to put down two guys, but the others kidnap Sara adding to their existing victim, a previous abductee, who is a CDC doctor. She is whisked away to a mountain compound with some "patriots" planning something major. Meanwhile, Will is badly beaten physically by others and mentally by himself (and Sara's mother) for not saving Sara. Faith Mitchell, Amanda work with the FBI to find Sara, the well-financed "patriots" their charismatic, sociopath leader, Dash. Another pretty scary, but plausible scenario from Karin Slaughter. ( )

The Last Widow. Karin Slaughter. 2020. Gosh it was great to read a Will and Sara novel. I cannot remember when I read the last one. When Will and Sara stop near the Emory hospital to help people in a car wreck, Sara is kidnapped by the group that just bombed the hospital parking deck. Will goes undercover with the white supremacists group which had previously kidnapped a doctor who worked at the CDC. Vintage Slaughter. Suspenseful with touches of humor and romance. ( )
