Interesting story but too long for storytime. Dragon King(underwater king) needs rabbit's liver to cure him. Turtle tricks rabbit into helping the King, then rabbit tricks the Dragon King. Lots of tricking, everyone is saved, even the Dragon King-divine intervention saves him. ( )

The Rabbit’s Escape is a story about a king of the sea people who becomes very ill. His advisors tell him that in order to get well he must consume the liver of a rabbit. A turtle volunteers to go and find a rabbit liver. The turtle finds and rabbit and tricks him to get him back to the king. Once there, the rabbit realizes what is going on and declares that he did not bring his liver with him. He needed to go back and get it. The turtle escorts him back but the rabbit escapes. The distrout turtled, feeling as if he had let the king down, brings the king Ginsing root. It heals the king. And this is why Ginsing root is consider to be a natural healing medicine.
I liked this story very well. I read the story aloud to some Kindergartern children. They were very interested in the story until about the end. I am not sure why they seemed to loose interest. I would like to try reading it to children again, because I like the story so much. Maybe I will have a chance to try to read it to olders students some day.
I would start off a lesson on world geography and cultural awareness off by reading this book. The book is written in both english and Korean. The Korean language print is above the english. Of course most American students will not be able to read it, but it would be good to introduce them to the fact that there are other countries in the world that speak and write a different language. Another thing I would do would have a Korean American come to class and explain a little bit about their heritage. It would be great if one of my students had a Korean background. Another extension idea is one that I actually used in math class. I wanted to introduce a rabbit puppet that was good at certain math skills. I told the students that this rabbit puppet would visit them soon, but first I wanted to read them a story of anther “smart” rabbit. It got the students thinking about the theme of intelligent rabbits and later I had a rabbit puppet who performed some math skills. ( )
