I found the book interesting, it keeps you reading it is never boring. I don't give it 5/5 because I reserve those for mind-blowing stories. This book was gripping but it wasn't exactly mind-blowing. ( ) Twenty-five-year old Jules Larsen's life is in free-fall. She recently broke up with her cheating boyfriend, is unemployed, and has no place to live. Jules is crashing on her pal Chloe's couch for the time being. In desperation, she answers an ad for a strange-sounding job that may alleviate her financial woes. She applies to be an apartment sitter for three months; in return, she will receive twelve thousand dollars in cash. After collecting this tidy sum, she hopes to start fresh. Riley Sager's "Lock Every Door" goes back and forth in time. In italicized chapters, an injured and bewildered Jules is in a hospital bed receiving medical attention. We then learn what happened earlier, when Julie was hired to live in the Bartholomew, an old and elegant Manhattan building with a doorman, wealthy residents, and a mysterious past. Her boss, the elegant Leslie Evelyn, sternly informs Jules that she must obey the rules if she wants to keep her job. She is to spend every night in the apartment, is forbidden to entertain guests, and must respect the privacy of her fellow occupants. Jules is no dummy, but her tragic history and current challenges blind her to the obvious signs that something is amiss. She is particularly alarmed when Ingrid, the sitter for apartment 11A, the one beneath Jules's, unexpectedly disappears. Was there a sinister reason for Ingrid's hasty departure? Jules decides to dig into the shadowy history of the Bartholomew. Sager throws in red herrings to muddy the waters, but when Jules finally learns the shocking truth, it may be too late to escape. "Lock Every Door" is fast-paced and suspenseful enough, and we cannot help but sympathize with the beleaguered heroine. On the other hand, Jules's naiveté is a bit hard to swallow; the plot is wildly implausible; the characters are one-dimensional; and the conclusion is a little too tidy, considering the chaotic goings-on that preceded it. This escapist novel will likely appeal to thriller aficionados who are not sticklers for logic and realism. Everyone has the right to survive. Does not matter what social class you belong to, who you know, who you are, how much money is in your bank account, or what your background is. Sounds logical, right?! Well…. what if there is a certain group of people who believe others are disposable and does the extreme to prove that? This is where the sinister, thriller, mystery, and suspense of this book comes in. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
