Thorn Drennan blames himself for the death of his wife and unborn child, and he’s been living a shadow of a life for the past two years. As a former FBI agent and the local county sheriff, he doesn’t like bending the law, but now he works for a security company that’s willing to break the law when needed. Though he wants to help Sophia, he doesn’t like or understand the protective and sexual feelings he has for her. As they work together to escape her enemies, he soon realizes he may have a second chance at happiness.
Sophia is stubborn and vulnerable, and Thorn is torn between remaining loyal to his dead wife and moving on with his life. They’re both broken, hurt people and fit together well.
I enjoyed this story, but I found it strange the majority of the book took place in a span of about three days. Sophia and Thorn barely got any sleep, and I have no idea how they had so much energy to do what needed to be done. Their feelings bloomed fast for one another, but it felt believable since high-octane, dangerous situations bring people closer together.
I didn’t notice any typos, which is always refreshing. Characters from the previous books played secondary roles in this one, and I would like to read those books.
