I'm really having a hard time coming up with a rating for this anthology. My first instinct for a rating was 2,5 stars. It was ok/I liked it. But was it more ok than liking it? I really don't know.

I expected something different. I can't remember what, but it is one of the reasons it took so long for me to complete this one.

In my updates I have written in a few sentences how I felt about the stories/comics.

I think most of the time it felt too short to me. Which is a bit hypocritical of me because that's what an anthology is about. But with other anthologies the stories are short, but feel more complete.

Which is a shame because I like reading about love.

Det känns som jag borde skriva något mer intelligent och kortfattat än jag riktigt förmår för att sammanfatta The secret loves of geeks, redigerad av Hope Nicholson: en hel mängd talangfulla personer har ju skrivit om så många aspekter av kärlek, och vanligen också nördighet. Kanske är det bäst att börja med Patrick Rothfuss essä, som avslutar samlingen och som diskuterar de olika betydelserna i ordet »kärlek«, och att romantisk kärlek långt ifrån är den enda sorten, och att fokuset på den, och i synnerhet den sort som kan slå över i svartsjuka, inte är nyttigt.

Ty bland det icke obetydliga antalet bidrag som fokusera på just romantisk kärlek i alla de olika former den kan ta och numer allt oftare tillåts ta, så finns det också utrymme för det som är det avskiljande ordet i titeln: det kan handla om kärlek tack vare nörderier, kärlek trots nörderier, kärleken till dem, eller alltihop samtidigt. Formaten på berättandet varierar: en del är vanliga textbaserade essäer, en del är serier, en del är mer av hybridformer. De flesta historier är överraskande positiva: trots att önskan att accepteras är ett ofta återkommande tema, och ilska över hur en del saker står till inte är ovanligt, så är det sällan kärleken är totalt olycklig, inte ens den som inte varar (möjligen undantaget den till Star Wars, där såren efter fantommajonnäsen fortfarande inte läkt).

Den sammantagna bilden man får är att nördkulturen är en sorts friare värld, där annat än den typiskt heteronormativa, maskulint anpassade kärleken får finnas. Det vet jag inte; tyvärr finns det ju flera exempel på hur folk som en gång skulle setts som nördar bildar mobbar via internet och försöker tysta det som avviker från deras syn på verken. Nörderi har ju alltid haft drag av eskapism in i en bättre värld, med större möjligheter och där ondskan kan besegras, men det är så lätt att tro att alla definierar ondska på samma sätt. Även om denna ensidighet här tycks vara önskad finns den likväl där, men med tanke på den stora bredd som trots allt finns är det nästan löjligt att fråga efter mer. Vänta alltså inte en alltför kritiskt djuplodande undersökning, och gläds åt den stora lycka som trots allt bärs fram. ( )

As dazzling as the cover!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I enjoyed The Secret Loves of Geeks even more than its predecessor, The Secret Loves of Geek Girls.

I had Geek Girls on pre-order, something I rarely do (unless there's a can't-miss deal involved), in no small part because Margaret Atwood's name was attached to the project. (FAVORITE.) The day the book arrived, I pounced on it, but my enthusiasm quickly waned when I realized that the "secret loves" referenced in the title were actual interpersonal relationships and not, as I assumed, guilty pleasures. I was seriously soured on relationships at that point. Well, relationships not involving dogs, anyway.

As a recent widow, I'm still not very keen on the topic (feeling hecka cynical over here), but the breadth of diversity found in The Secret Loves of Geeks won me over. (Also it probably helped that my expectations were adjusted accordingly.) In a mix of personal essays and comics, the contributors share their own stories and anecdotes (and even the occasional piece of advice) about love, in all its triumphs and tragedies. Most of the stories are about romantic love, yes, but platonic love and familial love and love of fictional 'verses also represent. There are coming out stories, and stories about grief and loss. Comics about trans headcanons and essays about how Buffy's journey parallels that of the author, a trans woman.

It's hard to point to a favorite or two; by the time I finished the anthology, I realized that I'd starred at least half of the pieces! There were only a smattering I didn't care for, and just two I skimmed through or skipped altogether.

Levi Hastings's "So Say We All" kind of broke me, and not just because I'm grieving too. I think the ghost dog is what set me over the edge.

"Trolling for Lesbos" by Gabby Rivera is also great, and boasts the best title of the bunch. America just jumped to the top of my wishlist.

Ivan Salazar's "The Walter Mercado Effect" is as informative as it is touching and entertaining, and Gwen Benaway's "Being the Slayer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Burden of Trans Girlhood" slayed me (sorry not sorry).

But what is more feminine than fighting for your humanity? Men have their humanity handed to them. It’s preordained. Women are the ones who fight to make our way and work to have our partners respect us. People praise the sweet girl but they never acknowledge the bitch who gets shit done. So here’s to Buffy, a complex and powerful woman in a world of paper-thin girls. You’re my inspiration.

Some of the artists - Hope Nicholson, Margaret Atwood (duh!), Valentine De Landro, Amy Chu, Gabby Rivera - were already on my radar, but The Secret Loves of Geeks gave me a whole new roster to explore. Definitely a good thing.
