DCI Oldroyd is faced with The Locked Room mystery. How does one kill the occupant of a room that no-one can enter or exit. Lord Redmire is in heavy debt and decides to re-create the trick that his father had performed. To this end he invites a television crew and police to watch the performance. But it doesn't work out as he expected.
An enjoyable mystery but I didn't take to the possible suspects, or to the characters of the police.

As the story opens, a dysfunctional family prepares for a highly publicized magic trick being performed by the lord of the manor. He summons family members, guests, news teams, and an unsuspecting DCI Oldroyd. Unsuspecting, because he isn’t expecting to launch a murder investigation on the site. Ellis spends more time than usual sifting through the suspects, and keeps the murderer’s logistics a secret to the end. ( )

It was fun reading this book. Having read all Hercule Poirot books, this book gave melancholic feel. I can't say it's particularly original, since Agatha Christie already wrote so much, but for the fans of this genre, it sure is a good read. ( )

This is the third, for the moment, the last, in the cozy mystery series featuring DCI Olroyd and his colleague DS Stephanie Johnson. The audio book is well produced and is engaging listening.

Lord Redmire's father was the one who had the locked room trick installed in his house, but once performed, it was forgotten for over 30 years. now his son wants to use the trick to bring tourists to the house.

He invites DCI Oldroyd to be an official witness at the operation of the trick, but that actually has the effect of ensuring that the police are at hand to begin the investigation into Lord Redmire's death.

I certainly hope there are more titles to come in the series. ( )
