Romance. Humor (Fiction.) Young Adult Fiction. HTML:"An atmospheric, multilayered, sex-positive romance." â??Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

After an awkward first encounter, Birdie and Daniel are forced to work together in a Seattle hotel where a famous author leads a mysterious and secluded life in this romantic contemporary novel from the author of Alex, Approximately.
Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she's cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel.

In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide. The hotel's charismatic young van driver shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes the waterfront Moonlight Diner where Birdie waits for the early morning ferry after work. Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and he's stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a famous reclusive writerâ??never before seen in publicâ??might be secretly meeting someone at the hotel.

To uncover the writer's puzzling identity, Birdie must come out of her shell...discovering that the most confounding mystery of all may be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle that i

i really enjoyed this book. I normally love Jen Bennett books and this book was no exception. I really enjoyed how this book focused on the self discovery for the lead girl. I think the setting of this story the older hotel was so fun, I just wish it was featured a bit more. I found the plot to be predicable at moment but still a enjoyable plot and not too predictable. The romance was super compelling and I found myself often screaming at the book. I would have liked a clear epilogue but other then that was fun summer themed read! ( )

I loved Daniel and actually really liked Birdie...but this was difficult to read. Birdie reminds me a lot of an online acquaintance of mine, someone whose insecurity and need for control have more than once left me feeling as if I'm stuck in a friendship audition that will never end. Birdie possesses, I think, significantly more maturity and self-awareness, but some of my frustration and hurt from that online acquaintance—who I've accepted will never be the close friend I'd like her to be—bled through every time Birdie pushed Daniel away and pulled him back again. It didn't help that her choices and behavior clearly hurt Birdie just as much as they did everyone around her. ( )

I always so look forward to Jenn Bennett’s books. She writes such quirky, fleshed out characters and immerses you so fully in whatever setting she chooses that it’s like taking a vacation to that city. In this case, it was Seattle, and I loved getting to see the sights alongside Birdie and Daniel. Birdie and Daniel meet by chance and have, ahem, a single night together, and then by pure coincidence discover they will be working together at a hotel on the night shift. Their relationship is soooo cute. Daniel is a sweetheart, Birdie is fun, and they both have complex backstories that were poignant to unwrap. And bonus points for Mona, Birdie’s awesome aunt!

Another thing that was awesome was that there were so many great messages. Very sex-positive. Birdie has narcolepsy and Daniel deals with deafness in one ear plus a previous suicide attempt and depression and the book does a great job of integrating their conditions into the plot and showing how real teens deal with real medical issues in a positive way. Super good stuff. The plot revolves around Birdie and Daniel stalking a complete stranger because they suspect him to be a famous writer and want to discover his identity. It gets to the point of following him all over town and breaking into his house. Which... got pretty creepy! . But the Birdie and Daniel moments, plus family moments are there a plenty, and adorable.

Trigger Warnings: suicide, depression, stalking, parental death, loss of pregnancy
