Dodo is perhaps suitable for younger readers, but both books are not cartoon-y nor simplistic. Picked up on sight from the local library for W, he read first without my checking it. W pronounced it "weird: not bad weird, just weird". He then showed me various scenes, specifically panels in which the Dodo was destructive, and the dream sequence (though he didn't identify it as such).

Read myself later: a 6-year-old girl copes with her parents' separation, and subsequent changes in friends and family life, and the bird visits. I especially appreciate the ambiguity as to whether depicted events occurred literally, or stand in for the girl's emotional reality.

Thematic parallels to A Monster Calls, though the underlying story differs. (
