Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's first novel, The Wife Between Us, completely creeped me out. So I was prepared for demented and twisty when I picked up their new novel -- An Anonymous Girl.

Not. Prepared. Enough.

Holy crap. There is nothing scarier than a scenario that could actually happen. This tale of jealousy, lies, manipulation, and madness could happen.....and that makes it the worst sort of mind game. Ok Greer & Sarah....kudos ladies! You got me again. I am totally creeped out.

Awesome story! I picked up this book this morning fully intending to read a couple chapters then get some laundry, chores, etc done. Poof...suddenly it's this afternoon and I got nothing else done but read this book. Total binge.

The basics: A make up artist in NYC needs a little extra cash. She's getting a bit desperate. She didn't hit it big doing makeup for theater productions like she dreamed....she's making calls on clients to pretty them up for dates, events, etc. It's a job....but not a high paying one. She hears about a blind study on morality and ethics that pays $500. She could use the she tells a bit of a fib to get into the study. Little does she know that lying to get into this study on ethics will be more than's going to be twisted and dark.

The story definitely kept my attention from start to finish. Lots of psychological suspense. I felt sympathy for the main character, Jessica. Jess hangs on to guilt and self esteem issues from past decisions and actions....and those hangups are used to manipulate the crap out of her. It was disturbing because we all carry similar emotional baggage. In the hands of a knowledgeable manipulative person...maybe we all could be victimized like she is in this story.

Don't read this story looking for high literature.....this is mind candy of a disturbing nature. It's meant to create a feeling, an unease, discomfort....not existential literary fulfillment. Grab a classic for existential....grab this book for a total mind F. It makes for an awesome afternoon of psychological torment! I loved it! I can't wait to see what twisted plot they come up with next! I will definitely read it!

Any book that makes me binge the entire story at one sitting deserves full stars from me.... I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

**I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book from St. Martins Press. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**

It served it's purpose of being an easy "to read" audiobook running in the background while I did chores and whatnot. Overall it was boring, draggy and repetitive.

A woman hears of a university research project that will pay good money for participation. The woman joining the research project is our MC but we also have the psychologist running the project, narrating part of the story. I think it might be every other chapter. A scenario was played out and then it was repeated from the other's point of view. Miscommunications and secrets cause the tension/mystery. The shrink's obsession with morality was the "villain" of the story. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...

I won't even tag it as thriller or mystery because they are only weakly represented. I like things darker or at least more thrilling and mysterious. I going to make a new shelf "tame". I don't recommend and wouldn't read anything else by either of them. ( )

I would have to say this is pretty good being as I raced through it. There was no real surprises even at the end, as I was expecting it to end with a bang. Even with no great mysteries here, it was still a great read. ( )

“When money and morality intersect, the results can illuminate intriguing truths about human character.”

Jessica Farris is a 28 year old makeup artist, who moved to NYC from PA. She is busy but just getting by doing home visits for affluent people. She feels a responsibility to her younger sister Becky living in PA requiring speech and occupational therapy. The private sessions are expensive but Jessica pays for whatever the health insurance doesn’t cover.

On one of her home visits to a young college student, Taylor, she listens to Taylor and her friends chatting before they head out for the night. There’s a discussion regarding one student casually agreeing to a paid research study at the school. Although she feels guilty Jessica obtains the information when Taylor reports that she didn’t plan to follow through.

What Jessica thinks will be a quick questionnaire and easy money turns quickly into an experiment on morality and ethics. It seems once she becomes involved with Dr Lydia Shields there is no turning back. Initially, Jess is made to feel special and appreciating the extra bonuses allowing her to take care of her sister.

Slowly, Jess becomes paranoid as the web of deceit and jealousy surface. The research subjects are only referred to by a number. Things become more complicated and dangerous for Jess when she is manipulated into “helping” Dr Shields with some personal issues.

This story will take you on a ride to places you didn’t know existed. Hold onto your seat! You won’t want to stop until you have read the whole book!
