This book consists of excerpts from the lives of 6 women who broke barriers by being adventuresses, and then a short blurb on what they did with the rest of their lives. I would rather have read 6 longer books on each of these women (and thankfully the author provided a reading list). I think I would have been better off with something else from her collection. ( )

This book tells the tales of six women who sought adventure. Annie Edison Taylor went over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Annie Smith Peck climbed Huascaran, a mountain in Peru. Bessie Coleman became the first black licensed pilot and became a stunt pilot. Delia Akeley lived in Africa with a Pygmy tribe and went on an elephant hunt. Eugenie Clark assisted in a diving expedition in the muddy waters of Little Salt Springs. Thecla Mitchell competed in a 26.2 mile marathon in a wheelchair. All of the women show a remarkable sense of accomplishment. Math teachers can have students learn about measuring altitude by using triangulation and a hypsometer. Science teachers can have students learn about prostheses and how they work. They can also study about the affects of water pressure when diving. Geography teachers can have students learn about the different places where these women completed their adventures. English teachers can have students write a newspaper article about one of the women’s adventures. This book uses the dates of these women’s adventures and follows a chronological order. The first adventure was in 1901, and the book ends with the last adventure from 1990. The author also includes very few black and white photographs of the women so that the reader can see who these women are. The author also includes a table of contents, an afterword, a bibliography, and a picture credit. Another beneficial feature the author includes is an appendix of women adventurers. This lists more possible women for students to research. This book is useful for teachers who want to motivate female students and who want to provide them with self-esteem. Students will find the stories very interesting. I would find this book most useful for a classroom library. The cover of the book does not shout “excitement,” so I think many students would over look this book in a large school library. ( )
