In 2014, Time magazine announced that America had reached "the transgender tipping point," suggesting that transgender issues would become the next civil rights frontier. Years later, many people--even many LGBTQ allies--still lack understanding of gender identity and the transgender experience. Into this void, Austen Hartke offers a biblically based, educational, and affirming resource to shed light and wisdom on this modern gender landscape. Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians provides access into an underrepresented and misunderstood community and will change the way readers think about transgender people, faith, and the future of Christianity. By introducing transgender issues and language and providing stories of both biblical characters and real-life narratives from transgender Christians living today, Hartke helps readers visualize a more inclusive Christianity, equipping them with the confidence and tools to change both the church and the world.… (plus d'informations)

Great book that looks into gender/sex in the Bible, and how transgender Christians have wrestled with their faith. The discussion on eunuchs was particularly illuminating. Definitely recommend. ( )

I find myself fascinated by the intersections of gender and sexuality and religion, and I have a great deal of trouble understanding why so many Christians are triggered by the idea of transgender people, in particular. Why should this concept feel so threatening to so many? I think that the traditional Christian values of love and empathy would lead to an attitude of understanding, acceptance, and respect for people trying to live lives of authenticity and integrity. I still don't get it, and this book doesn't really help explain why many Christian hold that hostility towards transgender reality. But this book does do an excellent job of explaining an affirming and inclusive view, and I found that very refreshing and hopeful. The writing is clear and concise, the conclusions appear to be well-researched and, ultimately, convincing. This book is recommended reading for Christians who are open to a good-faith discussion of transgender issues. ( )

Hartke was baptized into the Lutheran church as an adult and embraces Luther’s both/and of saint and sinner – we are fully each. The book weaves together the stories of trans peoples’ experiences and stories of the Bible. Many people were interviewed for the book to share their stories and help support the efforts of expanding resources for trans people. There are lots of suggestions on finding more information and groups in the Notes and Further Readings sections.

Good resource for individuals who are curious about the intersection of trans identity and the Christian faith. ( )

I highly recommend this book for everyone who is questioning their own identity and place in the Kingdom of God, because this book offers hope and understanding. Reading this book also opens up a dialogue between ourselves and God, as we begin to open our hearts to someone greater than ourselves just as we open ourselves to our own vulnerabilities. ( )
