A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

"Meet Tomi Adeyemi—the new J.K. Rowling. (Yep, she's that good)." —Entertainment Weekly

After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could've imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too.

Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath.

With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance is the stunning sequel to Tomi Adeyemi's New York Times-bestselling debut Children of Blood and Bone, the first book in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy.

Praise for Children of Blood and Bone:

Part of series: Legacy of Orisha.

The first book was better, as I continued to read the second book I got confused since all the characters interest and actions kept on changing through out and it seemed that the miscommunication between all the characters could have been solved easily if they all just talked it out vs focusing on merely just the actions of one another. I feel like I've been reading this book forever, checking the audiobook out from the library multiple times, and therein lies the reason this took so long. I go through phases where the only way I read is via audiobook, but sometimes I need to absorb a book visually. I read 60% of this book in 4 hours, it's a wonderful book and I am looking forward to the 3rd installment hopefully coming out in 2021. ( )

It was incredible hard to write this, and I was really contemplating finishing it but I can't. This book just went in a direction that was very hard to get into , uncomfortable and foreign. I think that I'm completely off of this series. Which is such a shame because it had a fantastic 1st book. ( )

This is Book 2 of the Legacy of Orisha series which I believe is meant to be a trilogy but so far there is no sign of the third book. I hope the wait isn't too long because this book certainly ended on a cliffhanger.

In the land of Orisha (traditionally located in West Africa) the ruling family is at war with the maji who are the practitioners of magic. In the previous book magic had been suppressed but Zelie managed to have it released with help from the Princess Amari and her brother, Tzain. But not only the maji were able to practise magic as some of the ruling class gained magical powers including the Queen and Amari. The Queen drains the life force from her subjects and becomes super powerful. Zelie worries that the maji will not be able to withstand her powers. Amari believes that her brother, Inan, is dead and decides to declare herself as the ruler. But Inan is not dead and the Queen is determined to wipe out the maji whom she calls maggots. Amari thinks that if she can talk to Inan she can persuade him to live peacefully with the maji. While that seems a possibility because Inan promises to look after any maji who swear loyalty to him, his mother has other plans. Fighting continues and at the book's end it is not clear what has happened to the maji who may or may not have defeated the royal forces. And it appears that Zelie and her followers are facing some new challenge.

This is classified as YA fantasy but I think I would want to distinguish it from the Harry Potter type of YA read. It's more like The Hunger Games. ( )
