A sampler short story from Meikle’s The Ghost Club: Newly Found Tales of Victorian Terror, the conceit of which being that a group of authors celebrated for their ghost stories once attended a secret gathering where they proceeded to share and refine their material. Along the way stories familiar to the group but to no one else were put away and forgotten. Meikle takes on the task of resurrecting the authors in spirit, channeling the voices of the most eminent champions of the genre.

In the House of the Dead is Bram Stoker’s lost story. A restrained and brooding tale addressing the hinterland between life and death. The slow creep creates a lush Gothic atmosphere. Meikle has a decent stab at evoking the steady dread of Stoker’s writings. ( )

This story has been written with an attempt to emulate Bram Stoker. It doesn't do a bad job at it, and the story is certainly of the type you would expect from that era. A smooth and enjoyable read. ( )

In this short story the author, William Meike, channels famed author Bram Stoker as he tells his new tale at the gathering of an author’s club in London during the 19th century. And by channeling this author, Mr. Meike, attempts to capture all aspect Stoker’s writing style, from the structure/voice of story’s narrative to that of the characters, and seems to handle the mimicry quite well.

Mr. Meike uses this free Amazon download to serve as an example of his writing skills by channeling 14 famous authors in his book entitled “The Ghost Club: Newly Found Tales of Victorian Terror,” which, if I have the time I would consider purchasing a copy myself; and for having given me this opportunity I’ve given this short story 4 STARS.
