An Amazon Best Nonfiction Book of the Month Indiebound Bestseller Award-winning science writer Helen Thomson unlocks the biggest mysteries of the human brain by examining nine extraordinary cases Our brains are far stranger than we think. We take it for granted that we can remember, feel emotion, navigate, empathise and understand the world around us, but how would our lives change if these abilities were dramatically enhanced - or disappeared overnight? Helen Thomson has spent years travelling the world, tracking down incredibly rare brain disorders. In Unthinkable she tells the stories of nine extraordinary people she encountered along the way. From the man who thinks he's a tiger to the doctor who feels the pain of others just by looking at them to a woman who hears music that's not there, their experiences illustrate how the brain can shape our lives in unexpected and, in some cases, brilliant and alarming ways. Discover how to forge memories that never disappear, how to grow an alien limb and how to make better decisions. Learn how to hallucinate and how to make yourself happier in a split second. Find out how to avoid getting lost, how to see more of your reality, even how exactly you can confirm you are alive. Think the unthinkable.… (plus d'informations)

Nine interesting case studies. I thought when reading sacks that the patient”s perspective was what was missing, but it didn’t add as much as I’d hoped. ( )

This is a collection of nine interviews with people who have extraordinary brains – rare neurological conditions that expand on the concept of what the human brain is capable of. It covers total recall, seeing auras, synesthesia including mirror-touch syndrome, and a number of other unusual abilities or sensory disorders. The author is a science journalist with a background in neuroscience and does an excellent job of sharing her knowledge about this topic with writing that is clear and easy to understand. ( )

I never thought I’d enjoy reading about brain disorders but these stories were really fascinating. Helen Thomson also makes this subject matter accessible and at times delightful. ( )

Science journalist Helen Thomson here explores the complexity of the human brain through encounters with people who have a variety of different rare brain conditions: everything from people who can remember every day of their lives in extraordinary detail, to those who can get lost in their own house, to those who become convinced that they’re dead. This is pretty accessible science, written with a lightness of touch even though some of the subject matter is fairly heavy. Thomson is at her strongest when exploring how these people respond to their conditions and how they affect their daily lives. ( )

A real interesting book and as the title says, a journey through the world's strangest brains! Similar to Oliver Sacks but from a journalist point of view. Easy to read and hard to put down! ( )

Introduction
The Strange Life of the Brain
It's not something you easily forget: the first time you see a human head sitting upon a table. The worst part is the smell. The unforgettable stench of formaldehyde, the chemical fixative in which bits of the body are hardened and preserved. It gets up into your nostrils and really sticks around.

Never Forgetting a Moment
In 500 BC, the poet Simonides of Ceos was sitting in a large banqueting-hall. Rather than enjoying the meal, he was angry with his host — Scopas, a rich nobleman. Simonides had been promised a fine sum of money to compose a poem in his host's honour, which he had recited to the guests. But Scopas had refused to pay him. He told Simonides that the poem spent too long referring to the mythical twins Castor and Pollux and not enough time on his recent victories.
