Revisionist in tone - attempts (successfully I think) to argue that the massacres associated with Cromwell at Drogheda and Wexford didn't involve civilians and would have been broadly acceptable under the rules of war at the time. James Butler, Earl of Ormonde also comes over as more interesting than I'd have thought (although clearly not as smart as Cromwell). ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique
An eye-opening re-evaluation of Cromwell's campaign in Ireland--that challenges all conventional interpretations of his actions. Oliver Cromwell's "scorched earth" policy allegedly contributed to the deaths of thousands, making him one of the most reviled figures in Irish history. But, is there any solid evidence for this conclusion? Period sources and eyewitness accounts may argue otherwise. ..".an important book...scrupulous in his] examination of evidence...assiduous in research and he] quotes primary sources extensively. Above all, he understands that the past should not be judged by the standards and fashions of the 1990s."--Sunday Times. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
