The Double Wager is the digital reissue of a previously published and long out-of-print novel by New York Times Bestselling author Mary Balogh.Henrietta Tallant has always preferred the company of her brother and his rough-and-tumble friends to that of other ladies. She rebels at the prospect of making her debut into London society and the great marriage mart. However, when her brother's friends challenge her to entice the toplofty, unattainable Duke of Eversleigh into offering her marriage within six weeks, she recklessly accepts and wagers her beloved horse. The Duke of Eversleigh, who has always adamantly proclaimed his determination never to marry, is beginning to feel the pull of duty and the need to produce an heir. His friends do not believe he will give in so easily, however, and wager with him that he will not make a marriage offer within a month. When Henrietta deliberately collides with the duke in a London ballroom, then, each is intent upon winning a wager--without any thought to what will happen after it is won.… (plus d'informations)

Been going back to a few of my authors and read their older books where I felt "Is this the same author?". So when I picked up this book and the note from the author was that it was one of her earliest works and readers can compare her current style with style 20 years back, i was disappointed. Was almost tempted to skip reading this book and started reading with a preconceived notion that it wont be as good. Must say in the first half I was pleasantly surprised. Yes as the story went on the leading lady was shown to be a little too silly. However it did have many of the elements of a typical Mary Balogh and was quite allright. ( )

Definitely not one of the best from Ms. Balogh's back catalog. The premise is fairly silly bets by the hero and heroine that end up with them marrying. Henrietta, the heroine is likable enough though she seems pretty stupid at times. Eversleigh, the hero, saved the book. ( )

Two rather confident or even cocky characters each make a bet that they will end up together - but it ends up that they are actually a good match. Henrietta is pretty young and naive which adds a bit to the charm when she meets her match in the Duke of Eversleigh. ( )

It's a melancholy fact, philosophized the young dandy Viscount Damley, squinting through the brandy in his raised glass, "life ain't what it used to be.
