At 27 years old, Mariah Travers has become what she most feared - a spinster and a perpetual adolescent in the eyes of her family and the law. But her fortunes change when her father announces that he has promised her hand in marriage to an old friend and colleague in the House of Lords. Lord Peter deVere, Earl of Dunsford, is not at all who Mariah imagined marrying, but she is willing to take a chance on the older man in order to gain the freedom that only married women are allowed. After a tragic marriage that stretched on for two decades, Peter is hesitant to marry again. But he needs an heir, or else his dastardly nephew, Lord William, will inherit everything he's worked his entire life to build. But when he meets Mariah, sparks fly that neither of them expected. Their unlikely match stands a chance of giving each of them all the things they never realized they needed. But trouble abounds when the mine that has provided Peter with his fortune is exhausted and the search for new veins of copper begins. On top of that, Lord William isn't about to stand by and watch his inheritance disappear. His efforts to drive a wedge between Peter and Mariah cause havoc and heartbreak at Starcross Castle, which will take an act of heroic devotion to overcome as Peter sets out to prove that true love is ageless.… (plus d'informations)

First wife had 15 miscarriages?!! Tragic marriage for HIM?!!!!!
Murderous nephew and hysterical sister make things tough for the newlyweds. Skimmed to finish. Not reading anything else by MF. ( )

The characters started off seeming smarter than average, there were several times in the first half where I thought they would go one way, toward more drama than sense, and then was pleasantly surprised! But that quality really went downhill in the second half. It wasn't so bad that I started *disliking* the characters, but I was less sympathetic as more of their poor choices racked up. It's too bad because the first part was quite promising.

Usually I make an effort to read series in order when I can, but I realized part way through this that I was clearly missing the backstory on some of the side characters. This has multiple references to people and events from her West Meets East series, which my library actually has as well if I'd been paying attention, so I will put a pin in this one while I read those and then come back. (For anyone else who appreciates that context.) ( )

Pretty disappointing to be honest, although it started out so strong that it’s affected my star rating. Lovely to see Peter and Mariah turn a marriage of convenience into a good relationship from the start, but then the author decided to throw in drama up the wazoo with a truly wretched villain that just made the whole thing annoying for much of the book. Not sure yet if I want to return to this author. ( )

A good story.
Older hero who is a dream. Things are really good til they get to the house and his nephew turned up.
Sagged a bit in the middle but will try next book.
HEA. ( )
