This book is one in many of the series I have read and enjoyed! Brad Meltzer does a fantastic job of not sugar coating the life of Harriet Tubman, but still presenting it in a way that makes sense and is understandable to younger kids. The biography goes into detail of young Harriet's life, her time spent as a slave, and her bravery helping other slaves escape. The illustrations are very good at helping to tell her story. Many of my students asked to read this book again on their own after we had finished reading it as a class. If that isn't a good review, I don't know what is! I read this with my second graders, and would recommend it for second to fourth grade. ( )

This biography about Harriet Tubman is phenomenal. It captures the importance of Harriet Tubman historically, while still keeping it at a level that children can understand. It explains exactly how Harriet escaped and helped other slaves become free. She risked her life for so many innocent people, and this book shows how impactful she was in a time when black people were treated so poorly.
Not only is it written very well and understandably, it is illustrated in away that grabs the reader's attention. The colors are rich and the people are drawn to be really cute. Children would not only enjoy reading this book, but they will also learn so much about a huge part of American history. ( )

This story is a biography about Harriet Tubman, a very young former slave. The book goes through the story of Tubman and her family and the hardships they all experience. The rollercoaster of emotions keeps the book very intriguing by using both sadness with the situation and happiness that comes with her freedom. Tubman also becomes a great role model of confidence and leadership due to her determination to free other slaves and help the entire situation as a whole. This is a very good book for younger kids to understand the reality of when slaves were common. ( )

Harriet Tubman was a slave and was worked hard starting at a young age. She was split up from her family who was sold to different slave owners. Harriet Tubman grew to become a strong woman who eventually ran off to free herself from slavery. Harriet Tubman traveled the Underground Railroad to escape to a free state. After she became free she began to travel back to help other slaves escape the slavery life. This was a great read and I really loved how it was put together. I loved this quote from the book, "The measure of success isn't what you achieve for yourself, its what you do for others." This quote says a lot, she wasn't doing any of this for herself, but for others. She wanted them to have a great life and she risked so much for so many other people. Even though sometimes we have hard days in life, doesn't mean we have to dwell and stay there. ( )

The illustrations got my attention when picking books to read, they are done in the style of a comic book. There are thought bubbles for what each person pictured is saying. Throughout the entire book, Harriet remained very small, she looked like a child. It came across to me that this was for the purpose of letting children see that they can make a difference even though they are so small. In the end, there is a timeline for better understanding how old she was at each part. ( )
