This is one of the worst volumes of Astro City, redeemed only by the chapter in the middle about the origin of the Gentleman, Astro City's tuxedoed version of the Shazam Captain Marvel.
The rest of the book is a meta mess with a framing device narrator called the Broken Man who, true to his name, babbles, disappears and reappears, and fails to tell one of the stories he is supposed to tell. It's a dull, herky-jerky, and century-spanning tale of heroes and antiheroes who represent the changing music of the counterculture from every decade or so. Sooo meh.
My least favorite volume of the binge, but it still gets three stars thanks to the Gentleman. ( )
