Using the familiar premise of Around the World in 80 days, Mr. Veseth explores the regions, the history, and the economic dynamic of wines from many countries. There is a disadvantage of listening to the book on CD as I did, because there is no opportunity to copy the recommendations. However, the book does a wonderful job of explaining wines. One will almost certainly walk away with more info than one had before reading. ( )Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is an Early Review of the audiobook version of "Around the World in Eighty Wines: Exploring Wine One Country at a Time." As a casual wine drinker I really enjoyed this trip, based loosely on Jules Verne's "Around in the World in Eighty Days." The variety in different wines, from the more famous ones, to more exotic local ones, along with historical background made the book interesting and different from general wine guides. If you have an interest in wine, or history, or best of both worlds - both, then this book is highly recommended. Even better is having a chance to sample some of the more commonly available wines mentioned in this book while reading, or listening to it in the audiobook version. It's also a nice introduction to the wine world overall. A jovial journey in taste and diverse locales. Excellent book on wines. Taking the history and economics of wine, the author takes us around the world finding the best wines. At the same time giving us the history and economic impact of wines. What a trip and I now will begin to select wines from around the world instead of just American. Living in The Texas 290 Wine country we have lots of interest in wines. One disadvantage to the audio is you don't have have time to write down all the names of the wines at the end of each chapter. There are also hardback and paperback books of this title. Around the World in Eighty WinesBy Mike Veseth, Narrated by Eric Michael Summerer I received this audio book in exchange for a HONEST review. I rate based on the merit of the book as I see it (my opinion), nothing more...in this case the audio book. I am a huge fan of wine, whiskey and cheese so I had to get this audio book for review and my listening pleasure. I LOVED IT. Mike Veseth is a true wine connoisseur. I wasn't sure what to expect because he planned to follow the route from the story "Around the World in Eighty Days". At times his following the route seemed "sketchy" because he states, "we don't know where Phileas Fogg (main character) went from here so we'll just stop in XXXX because he MIGHT have." So the gimmick to the book was a bit off at times but it really did not detract from the knowledge Mr. Veseth passes along. The information about wines and vineyards is in-depth and extremely interesting. I learned so many new facts and I was simply amazed by many of the stories. Did you know about wine in Africa (not South Africa) and China? Find out the details inside this book/audio book. So much to learn...and if you did know something, Mr. Veseth often has a personal story of his own to add that makes the knowledge that much better. If you love wine, this is for you...if you like wine, listen to this, you'll learn so much and be able to look REALLY knowledgeable at the next party you attend where they are serving wine! LOVED THE AUDIO BOOK. Thanks for sharing it with me! Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. A fine listen. The author uses Phileas Fogg's travels to frame the wine discussions. It helps provide structure, I suppose, but didn't add or detract from the listen. I knew little about that which I imbibe before consuming. Now I imbibe a little more knowingly. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Inspired by Jules Verne's classic adventure tale, celebrated editor-in-chief of The Wine Economist Mike Veseth takes his readers Around the World in Eighty Wines. The journey starts in London, Phileas Fogg's home base, and follows Fogg's itinerary to France and Italy before veering off in search of compelling wine stories in Syria, Georgia, and Lebanon. Every glass of wine tells a story, and so each of the eighty wines must tell an important tale. We head back across Northern Africa to Algeria, once the world's leading wine exporter, before hopping across the sea to Spain and Portugal. We follow Portuguese trade routes to Madeira and then South Africa with a short detour to taste Kenya's most famous Pinot Noir. Kenya? Pinot Noir? Really The route loops around, visiting Bali, Thailand, and India before heading north to China to visit Shangri-La. Shangri-La? Does that even exist? It does, and there is wine there. Then it is off to Australia, with a detour in Tasmania, which is so cool that it is hot. The stars of the Southern Cross (and the title of a familiar song) guide us to New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. We ride a wine train in California and rendezvous with Planet Riesling in Seattle before getting into fast cars for a race across North America, collecting more wine as we go. Pause for lunch in Virginia to honor Thomas Jefferson, then it's time to jet back to London to tally our wines and see what we have learned. Why these particular places? What are the eighty wines and what do they reveal? And what is the surprise plot twist that guarantees a happy ending for every wine lover? Come with us on a journey of discovery that will inspire, inform, and entertain anyone who loves travel, adventure, or wine. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
