Over 200 divisions fought on the Western Front during the first year of World War I and those best suited to the challenges of trench warfare were the six infantry divisions of the original British Expeditionary Force (BEF). Their superiority was partially due to the high quality of the divisions' personnel and the first-class equipment provided to them. This book describes the organization and equipment of the BEF at the outbreak of the war in 1914, and relates how its structure changed both to accommodate the waves of Territorial and New Army units that were raised and to adapt to the rigours of conditions on the Western Front.… (plus d'informations)

Good for what it is, this booklet, as is typical for the series, is more about the organization and equipment side of the British army of the time, rather than providing a tabular listing of all the sub-units of the various divisions raised in this period. ( )

As usual with Osprey books this one is a nice intro to the makeup of the British forces in 1914-15, I have not read any of the other Battle Order series so i have nothing to compare it to in its own series but i would say it is on par with their Essential Histories series. However I do feel that the book could have used some better editing as a lot of information was repeated multiple times, I think i read about premature barrel wear of the 4.7in Heavy Gun in 3-4 times throughout the book in almost the exact same sentence structure. I also have to wonder why they decided to have some unit breakdown charts in color and some in black and white. Adding color to the charts realy doesn't add anything to them and it seem that they were done at random. Another problem with the book is that i wish they would have spent more time talking about the equipment of the army as they only gloss over it in 5 pages towards the end. The majority of the book is dedicated to the entire breakdown of the army ranging from the infantry, cavalry and artillery of both the main army and the territorial forces, which if you are interested in that this is where the meat of this book lies. Overall it’s not bad if you need a reference for the British army of 1914 but for information on the tactics and weapons it is somewhat lacking. ( )
