Last published in 1996, this listing of national and international awards is the print version of the Children's Book Council's Web site, Awards and Prizes for Children's and Young People's Literature and now contains 288 programs. The major portion of the volume, which gives information about each award and lists winners and runners-up from inception through 2005, is divided into "United States Awards Selected by Adults"; "United States Awards Selected by Young Readers"; "Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and United Kingdom (UK) Awards"; and "Selected International and Multinational Awards." Entries are arranged alphabetically by the award's name, and the introductory paragraph includes the frequency given, criteria, prize awarded, purpose, history, and information on the sponsor. Unfortunately, state-program entries are arranged by title, though an alphabetical state listing appears at the front of the book. Extensive indexes of people and book titles aid in finding specific information. Most of this information is available in other print and online sources, but this volume, albeit costly, will make a good desk reference. - Booklist.
