Quel souffle dans ce roman chorale dans lequel neuf personnages différents, que rien ne lie si ce n'est le contact avec la nature et les arbres, le sens de l'engagement pour des idées et la protection de notre environnement : un artiste dépressif dont la famille a toujours su et voulu maintenir en vie l'un des derniers châtaigniers d'Amérique ; Neelay, d'origine indienne, devenu paraplégique, fan de jeux vidéos et créateurs d'un génial jeu sur le foisonnement de la vie ; Douglas, vétéran du Vietnam ; Patricia, garde-forestière et auteur d'une thèse sur la manière dont les végétaux communiquent, etc. Tous vont se retrouver au «Redwood Summer» de 1990, événement central des «Timber Wars» qui virent s'opposer militants écologistes très engagés et exploitants forestiers à un moment où la sylviculture se transforme de plus en plus en exploitation intensive. L'auteur pénètre alors profondément la vie des arbres et nous en apprend beaucoup, avec émerveillement et respect, sur la manière dont les forêts sont organisées en vastes réseaux de communication. Richard Powers est tout imprégné de cette merveille de la nature. Son texte est superbe. Il n'hésite pas à présenter l'humanité comme un véritable problème, et nous met face à nos responsabilités. un de mes livres qui resteront dans ma bibliothèque, comme un joyau dont il faudra que je rouvre les pages régulièrement. Savoir encyclopédique sur les arbres, la nature en général, et grande humanité pour les personnages qui évoluent dans ce roman plus qu'émouvant. ( )

Plants’ memory and sense of time is utterly alien to us. It’s almost impossible for a person to wrap her head around the idea that there are bristlecone pines in the White Mountains of California that have been slowly dying since before humans invented writing.
