Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag." Le meilleur livre que j'ai lu depuis longtemps.
Je l'ai dévoré en 3 jours. Tara Westover nous plonge dans son univers tellement éloigné de tout ce que la plupart d'entre nous ont pu connaitre comme réalité. Avec une plume aussi touchante et envoutante, il est difficile de croire qu'elle n'a pas été scolarisée avant l'âge de 16 ans!

Fille de mormons fanatiques survivalistes, elle grandit isolée de la civilisation, avec la crainte de la fin du monde. Elle fait des provisions de nourriture, travaille dans l'entreprise de son père et ne fréquente pas l'école. Elle est également victime d'un frère violent et d'un père souffrant de maladie mentale.

En vieillissant, l'envie de s'affranchir de cet univers la pousse à s'inscrire au collège. Elle raconte sa difficile intégration au monde, son déchirement de s'éloigner de sa famille, son désir d'apprendre et d'avoir son propre opinion.

C'est un récit bouleversant qui fait beaucoup réfléchir sur la résilience de l'humain. ( )

Dad could be wrong, and the great historians Carlyle and Macauley and Trevelyan could be wrong, but from the ashes of their dispute I could construct a world to live in. In knowing the ground was not ground at all, I hoped I could stand on it. (p. 238)
