This is the most recently written off Diana Gabaldon's Lord John Grey series. I have now completed my reading of that series, and her Outlander series. This happens to have been my least favorite of all of those books, but I'd still probably rate it 4 out of 5*. This book didn't seem to have much of a climax compared to her others, but it still allowed me to be in their world for a bit. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

In which Lord John, anticipating a voyage home to England after his brief stint as military Governor of Jamaica, instead finds himself on his way to Cuba, where the British navy is preparing to lay siege to Havana-and where the Dowager Duchess of Pardloe (aka John's mother) is a guest (and potential hostage) of Governor Juan de Prado. One of the two final novellas of SEVEN STONES TO STAND OR FALL. This collection of Outlander novellas are all dealing with the interesting side-stories and lacunae of the Outlander universe. The events in this book take place after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and before Lord John Grey returns to North America to take part in the Revolutionary Wary. He has been the governor of Jamaica but has just been relieved of that post in order to set sail for Savannah (where he was throughout GTTBTIAG) to join the British Army. His stepfather arrives on the eve of his departure to tell Lord Grey that his mother, Dowager Lady Pardoe, is currently in Cuba having gone there to help her niece Olivia travel with her children to join her husband, Malcolm Stubbs, who is the British consul there. The British Navy is planning to attack Havana and her husband wants Lord Grey to extract her and Olivia and the children before the Navy arrives. Consequently Lord Grey, along with trusted servants, sail to Havana. He finds his mother but Olivia and the children have gone to an estate in the country. Before they can be brought back they contract yellow fever and Lady Pardoe goes off to nurse them. Meantime the British Navy arrive and Stubbs is arrested. He entreats Lord Grey to contact the slaves he has been secretly meeting with in order to get them to revolt and interfere with the Cubans' resistance to the Navy siege. Lord Grey is able to persuade the slaves in part because his servant whom he had rescued from the zombies in Jamaica spoke to them about Grey's courage and honour.
Just another little adventure for Lord John Grey! ( )
