This book is the story of one teenage boy in a Dorset village; unemployed, unhappy and friendless. But he is tightly bound to his home - to the people, the countryside. He is happiest roaming the fields, watching the sky and the birds, and killing animals. The author has summed up life in a modern English village and its characters perfectly. But he also has the ability to shock and to make you laugh out loud.

Lewis, the boy, is the last in a long line of agricultural labourers, the final generation. The village population was once made up of almost no-one else, but today it is inhabited by commuters, second-homers, retired people. Parallel to Lewis's story is the narrative of some of these 'incomers' who want to re-create their notion of a rural harvest ritual, involving the sacrifice of a corn dolly in the church. Inevitably, it is Lewis who has to make the final sacrifice.

The book is a mournful witness to the end of an agricultural way of life in England, entwined within a story of life, love and loss. ( )

Verschillende pagina's lang had ik het niet door dat dit een jongerenroman was en kon het boek nog enkele kanten op. En zelfs toen ik het wel door had - zo'n bildungsroman die je hoogstens van het voorlaatste naar het laatste jaar van de middelbare school opstuwt - las ik eigenlijk best gretig verder. Tot het boek de mist in gaat en het hoofdpersonage, al bij al goed op weg om diepgang te krijgen, gewoon een 17-jarige wordt met vrienden en verlangens en ouders en een kruisboog en dat soort dingen.

De schrijver verliest bovendien de grip op zijn personages en/of maakt ze te doorzichtig. A denkt dit en doet dat. B denkt dit en doet dat. Iedere dimensie wordt uit het verhaal gezogen en wat overblijft is net zo min spannend als de dagdromen van een willekeurige doorgeschoten puistenkop, tenzij je natuurlijk zelf zo'n willekeurige doorgeschoten puistenkop bent uit een gebroken gezin met absoluut geen idee wat te doen met je leven terwijl je verliefd bent op de buurvrouw en elke dag konijnen neermaait met een kruisboog ... Ik stopte met lezen rond pagina 168.

Toegegeven, met die kruisboog kan het nog beide kanten op. Maar ook daar: of het ene, en dan wordt het boek pas echt slecht. Of het andere, en dan ligt dat zo wel wat in de lijn der verwachtingen. (Ik bladerde even: het is het andere. Time to move on, 'ey ...)
