A real-life look at David, who is blind, as he begins kindergarten.

This book is about a kindergarten boy, David, who is blind, and hard of hearing. This book tells you all about David’s day at school. In the morning, him and his mom walk to the bus stop. David knows the bus is there when he hears the brakes squeal. His teacher has corrugated cardboard on his cubby, so he can feel for his cubby. In the classroom, there is a chart with I am not here, and another one that says I am here, the students find their stars and move it to here if they are there. David’s star has bumpy edges, so he can find his from all the other students. David also likes to swing, ride horses, pet dogs, and he even plays the piano. I loved this book, even though David has a disability, this book never made his disability an issue. This book teaches the reader what David’s day is like. I loved how the teacher made sure to help him have all the materials he needed in the classroom. Great book! ( )

I loved reading this book because it talked about a blind child living his life happily. He was also hard of hearing so it effected his language so he was also learning sign language as well. The book definitely emphasized the boy's strengths like playing the piano with his parents and a riding horse. It also represented him as a person that can do certain things on his own and some things with the help of others. It also depicted him in an integrated setting in school,on the bus, and when he goes to ride his horse. I loved this book because it emphasized that he was a happy kid regardless of his disabilities. While David cannot see and has troubles hearing, he is a regular kindergarten boy. The way he does things are a little different from the rest of his classmates, but all-in-all he is just like everyone else. This is a good book to show children that even though someone may be different, they're really quite the same.

My best friend's mom was blind and I spent most of my time at their house. I usually forgot that she couldn't see because she did everything that everyone else did. ( )
