Voilà je pense le meilleur Koontz que j’aie lu jusqu’à présent. Et de loin. Il s’agit d’un pavé tout au long duquel on se demande où l’auteur veut en venir. On ne fait pas tout de suite le lien entre les différents protagonistes. Les trois histoires sont parallèles, Koontz nous les raconte simultanément. Le personnage de Junior Cain est odieux, mais les passages le concernant sont passionnants. Ils sont racontés de son point de vue mais à la troisième personne, ce qui accentue son côté mégalo. Le plus jouissif c’est qu’on ne prend conscience de l’étendue de sa folie que progressivement, car lui-même n’en a absolument pas conscience. Les autres personnages sont attachants, on s’intéresse facilement à eux, ils sont bien étoffés et travaillés. Le livre est long, l’histoire est décortiquée, mais à aucun moment je ne me suis ennuyée. Le côté légèrement surnaturel ajoute une touche de suspens fort bien mené. On se demande souvent où commence et où s’arrête l’inexpliqué. Les thèmes du destin, d’une réalité parallèle, des phénomènes de cause à effet sont largement évoqués. L’action est omniprésente, les idées foisonnantes, le récit haletant, un pavé à engloutir sans modération. ( )
