Classic Literature. Fiction. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:

This episodic novel tells the story of Archibald Moffam, a perennially down-on-his-luck character who meets with misfortune as he tries to navigate the landmines of marriage, family relationships, and the working life. Told with the kind of sparkling wit only P.G. Wodehouse can muster, Indiscretions of Archie is enough to make anyone feel better about their own mishaps, while providing plenty of belly laughs along the way.

This review is for the audiobook only. To see my thoughts on the book, see my review of the Kindle edition.

Mark Nelson does a very good narration in this Librivox recording. I like the fact that he does different voices for the different characters. However, I found the voice for the main character Archie was not quite right -- the "English" accent didn't sound correct. This bothered me each time I started listening after having taken a break, but was quickly forgotten once the story caught my attention. ( )

3½ stars. Archie isn't as fun as Bertie but in the same vein. Instead of Jeeves, Archie has his wife Lucille to look out for him. Fun fast read but if you haven't read any Wodehouse before, I'd suggest starting with either a Jeeves book (I particularly like "The Code of the Woosters") or a Blandings book ("Something Fresh" is v. good and is the first in the series). A light-hearted series of incidents in classic Wodehouse style. The hero is the somewhat naive and not-too-bright (but very kind-hearted) Archie. Landing in New York to try to find a job, he falls in love and marries a young woman called Lucille. Her father is a wealthy hotel owner who, unfortunately, takes a strong dislike to Archie.

As Archie attempts to make his father-in-law accept him, he falls into one scrape after another, some of them through no fault of his own. Sometimes I found myself cringing in sympathy, but others chapters were amusing and enjoyable, and the conclusion entirely satisfactory.

Not the best Wodehouse, and possibly not ideal as an introduction to the author, but a good read nonetheless. My version was a free download from Project Gutenburg, and I read it on my Kindle.

As someone else mentioned on here, it was refreshing to read/listen to a Wodehouse novel in which the "hero" and his woman have a *good* relationship. None of Bertie and his unending attempts to free himself of all romantic entanglements...Archie and his wife seem genuinely happy. It was nice. ( )

"But, after all, I don't suppose it was the poor fellow's fault. He does whatever his wife tells him to do."
"We all do that," said Archie the married man. ( )
