It is 1988. On a dead-end street in a run-down suburb there is a music shop that stands small and brightly lit, jam-packed with records of every kind. Like a beacon, the shop attracts the lonely, the sleepless, and the adrift; Frank, the shop’s owner, has a way of connecting his customers with just the piece of music they need. Then, one day, into his shop comes a beautiful young woman, Ilse Brauchmann, who asks Frank to teach her about music. Terrified of real closeness, Frank feels compelled to turn and run, yet he is drawn to this strangely still, mysterious woman with eyes as black as vinyl. But Ilse is not what she seems, and Frank has old wounds that threaten to reopen, as well as a past it seems he will never leave behind. Can a man who is so in tune with other people’s needs be so incapable of connecting with the one person who might save him? The journey that these two quirky, wonderful characters make in order to overcome their emotional baggage speaks to the healing power of music—and love—in this poignant, ultimately joyful work of fiction.

This is a sweet book about an author I like. Frank, who inherited his love of vinyl recordings from his quirky mother, runs a music shop that only sells vinyl records despite the demand for CDs. His shop is on Unity Street with interesting people who are engaged with each other despite the infringement of the modern world.

There is a touch of magical realism involving Frank's incipient love interest; however, it is overall a novel about kindness, understanding and friendship. Everyone needs a Frank when the qualities he exhibits are often lacking in many lives. ( )

Wonderful story about music and human frailties and saving people from their own insecurities. Some parts were a little predictable, but I enjoyed the characters. ( )

Sweet book. Make sure to read with Apple Music or Spotify handy so you can listen along with the characters. ( )

I loved this quirky British story! As the wife of a musician I appreciate the connection people have to music. Penguin has a Spotify playlist with the songs from the book, I recommend listening to it as you read even if it's just to remind you of the song, it would have been cool if the audiobook played at least samples of the music. A love story, about music, friendship and kindness.

Frank runs a record shop and refuses to sell anything other than vinyl. He listens to people and finds music that touches them. He is part of a small community threatened by modernisation, struggling to stay connected and relevant in a changing world.

The cast of characters is good, Kit the young man who has a tendency to break everything he handles, Father Anthony and his religious artifacts shop, Maud and her tattoo parlour, the Williams' brothers and their funeral home, Pete the barman of England's Glory all connected by Unity Street.

This is a light, easy read, a bit laboured and predictable at times, but there was enough of a story reveal to keep me interested. ( )
