"Newly restored from the original manuscript and more than a quarter longer than the existing editions: one of the finest novels from one of the greatest English novelists is finally available in the form he intended. Trollope wrote The Duke's Children, his final Palliser novel, as a four-volume work but was required by his publisher to reduce it to three, necessitating the loss of nearly sixty-five thousand words. A team of researchers led by Steven Amarnick has worked with the manuscript at Yale's Beinecke Library to restore the novel to its original form. The result is richer and more complex, with a subtly different ending: a clearly superior book to the one that has always been published. Plantagenet Palliser, the Duke of Omnium, haslost both his vivacious wife, Lady Glencora, and his position as prime minister of Great Britain. The bereft duke is left to try to manage his three grown children, whose rebellions take the various forms of gambling debts, university pranks, and unsuitable romantic attachments. But though he fails to understand his offspring, Palliser truly cares for them, and he navigates the clash of generations with a growing awareness of the necessity of compromises, both political and personal. Insightful, entertaining, and compassionate--and now restored to its full glory--The Duke's Children is a fitting conclusion to the epic Palliser series, one of the most remarkable achievements of British fiction"-- "The newly restored full text of Anthony Trollope's novel The Duke's Children, which his original publisher had made him cut by a quarter (about 65,000 words). His cuts have been restored from the original manuscripts"--… (plus d'informations)

This is the full version of the novel, which until recently was available only in the cut-down version – which is still very long at around 300,000 words. On the whole it was fortunate that Trollope was pushed into making the reduction (of about 22%) because the extended one tries the patience of even a loyal Trollope fan. He was a verbose writer, but with most of his works, one is prepared to put up with this for the overall quality of the text.

However, this version of 'The Duke's Children' contains endless disquisitions on how various characters feel, or Parliamentary matters, or other subjects which the author felt like including. So it bcomes somewhat tedious instead of being a very pleasant finale to the Palliser series. On the whole, it is better to read the shorter version.

This Oxford World's Classics edition has some interesting material on the cuts, and very full explanatory notes, making the whole very nearly 700 pages. ( )

This was a reread of the final book in Trollope's Palliser series. This time, however, I read the uncut version. The story is that Trollope wrote the novel and then his publishers demanded that he cut 65,000 words. The cut version is what was published and until very recently was the only thing available. In the last few years, Trollope's original version has been published. I read the "short" version last year but then this restored text became available in an affordable Everyman's edition. Unfortunately, none of the text is marked to show what is restored so the amazing Liz (lyzard) used her Folio Society edition to post ALL of the 65,000 words of cuts in this thread. http://www.librarything.com/topic/272678
I'm sure it was a ton of work, but I so appreciate it.

The result of comparing these two versions of the novel was so interesting to me. I was dissatisfied when I read the originally published version and this restored version went a long way toward repairing that. The characterizations are deeper, the politics are more thoroughly explored and explained, and the characters from other novels are more present. It was all in all a much more satisfying ending to the series and I'm so glad this restored text is now available. I highly recommend it if you're reading Trollope. ( )

No one, probably, ever felt himself to be more alone in the world than our old friend, the Duke of Omnium, when the Duchess died.

ISBNs 1101907819 and 1502939916 and the Folio Society 2015 edition are expanded editions of Anthony Trollope's The Duke's Children restoring ALL of the text cut from the originally published version (approximately 25% of the original was cut - until now). Please do not combine this complete work with the original version of The Duke's Children (which was the only version available until 2015).
