This is a low-level introduction for educators, trainers, and students in the helping fields who work with or will be working with clients who require help in managing current problems and developing and maintaining self-helping skills for managing future problems. The author presents his own five-stage model (DASIE) for helping clients develop the specific lifeskills necessary to assume responsibility for how they feel, think, and act. (The five stages of the model are: 1) Develop the relationship, identify and clarify problems; 2) Assess problems and redefine in skills terms; 3) State working goals and plan interventions; 4) Intervene to develop self-helping skills; and 5) End and consolidate self-helping skills. Using Nelson-Jones' approach and his five-stage model, readers learn to show clients how to become their own best helpers. The book is organized to lead students step-by-step through the counseling process and gives them concrete examples along the way, providing the opportunity to measurably improve their skills and their confidence.
