Excerpt from Die Beiden Freunde: Eine Erz hlung IT is not the purpose of these few pages to dwell at length on the life and career of the great strate gist, whose only narrative work is edited in these pages. Every Cyclopedia* or every Dictionary of Biography provides those data which to reiterate, or even to condense, here would amount to a waste of time. A few words on Moltke the writer, how ever, may be appropriate. But since Moltke the writer is inseparable from Moltke the man, offering a veritable school example of Le style c'est l'homme, I repeat here part of the commemorative words, lofty as well as terse and to the point, expressed by Generaloberst Graf Schlieffen, one of Moltke's successors in the office of Chief of the General Staff of the Army, which is one of the highest dignities and responsibilities within the sphere of German national life. These words were spoken at the unveiling of the Moltke monument in Berlin, a statue showing the general in an attitude most fitting the thinker of battles.
