The One
by John Marrs published by Harlequin (US & Canada) Hanover Square Press has to be one of my favorite books that I have read by an author new to me this year. It was one that I couldn’t put down even though I am so late on writing this review. I am thankful to Netgalley and all parties involved for receiving this arc. The review below is my honest opinion. Living in 2018 many of us know that there are more dating sites then we know what to do with. Yet we all try to find that perfect match. This book uniquely explores the concept of love that is matched by your DNA. What could go wrong right???? Here is the catch, your DNA match could live on the other side of the world, or be decades older than you, or already married, or even the same gender as you. It may not matter, you are made for each other.
Now what hooked me… The original writing the short chapters and fast paced story line. Every character has its own personality and you connect with each one even the strange ones and there are a couple of them I promise. I think that everyone is interested in finding “The One” and being perfectly suited that they sometimes get lost in the bigger picture. If you like Psychological Thrillers this is “The One” for you.

A gripping read based on a clever concept, that there is one perfect partner out there for each of us. That person could live in the next street or on the other side of the world.

Part thriller, part crime, part romance with a mix of science fiction as well, this book will appeal to a lot of people. Each chapter follows the story of one of five unconnected people and each person’s story builds to its own dramatic conclusion or twist.

Although at the start I struggled in trying to remember all the different characters and their situations as i am terrible with names, but I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone

I was NOT expecting to like this one as much as I did.

Ironically, my biggest issue with this was that there wasn't as much ooey gooey love stuff as I like. I do like my sweet romantic subplots and being able to sigh contentedly. Marrs is quite an unemotional writer.

Other than that, this was EXCELLENT. A slightly dystopian premise that worked because it wasn't over explained and because it changed our world JUST the right amount to believe in. Not a thriller, but kind of a thriller.

This book follows five different characters, and FYI, you can read through chapter 98 character by character before you'll hit a spoiler. Part of what made this ridiculously pacey was because you read only a few pages of one character and then you want to keep reading but you have to read the other four characters before you get more of the first. That ended up frustrating me, so I got about two fifths through and then read character by character. I think that was what made me realise the writing wasn't actually that strong, but I'm not a patient person and I do not do well at rebuilding excitement.

I loved the philosophical thoughts about love this raised, too! And it did so extremely well! And the ending was super exciting and thought-provoking! (Even though one ending REALLY annoyed me!)

What a strange and weird book. I have to go tell everyone about it now because I need to process (WOW. some of those moments!)

DEAD. Five stars for this alone. ( )

Just did not feel this book. I could not get into the story or the characters. It did not seem like a typical Private novel to me. Maybe Private has just expanded too much to keep it as the small tough little organization as it was meant to be originally. Then again, maybe it has just outgrown itself and there needs to be a Private # two. ( )
